On Sunday we drove down to Velro Bosne, on the outskirts of Sarajevo, for a leisurely walk. This area is cut-off to cars and one of the country’s top natural landmarks as it is stunningly beautiful. Because cars are not allowed, the paths were full of walkers, cyclists and roller blading kids, which was lovely. Oh, and horse drawn carriages too, much to Emma’s delight.
Velro Bosne gets its name as the natural streams run down from the hills and gather in pools here, before rushing down small waterfalls and away again, primarily to the River Bosna. The setting is beautiful and well kept however during the war, the park was understandably not maintained and locals chopped down the trees for firewood. That the park has been restored so quickly and thoroughly(mainly by local youths led by an international ecological organisation, impressively) is amazing.
Not quite understanding the layout of the area, we parked at one end and set off walking, carrying a little picnic and thinking the park wouldn’t be far. Turns out we were mistaken! An hour later we reached the park, spying a car park, restaurant and ice cream truck. Ok then, next time, we’ll know better! There was a play park too so while we sat in the shade and recovered, Emma played happily. Then we set off to investigate the pools and waterfalls before climbing into a horse drawn carriage for a ride back to the car.
The main avenue, pedestrians only (mostly)
Emma stopping to have a drink of water from a fresh water fountain
One of the several natural pools of water at the foot of the hills. The water is astonishingly clear and cold but the algae gives it that vibrant green look.
One of the waterfalls where the water rushes away again
The pools had ducks and swans in them.
The furthest point in this picture is the main source of water from the hills pooling and you can paddle in it, if you don’t mind the cold.
A carriage ride back along the avenue, to save all our poor feet and just because it made Emma happy
